Get the Invasives to Fly Away

The USDA WS-NWRC Hawai‘i Field Station is recruiting a term research biologist to be stationed on Kaua‘i to lead the development of a management plan for the invasive rose-ringed parakeet. These birds are destroying farmers’ crops, as well as annoying people with their loud calls.

The NWRC Hawai‘i Field Station develops and tests methods and strategies to manage invasive species and their impacts on agriculture, natural resources, and human health and safety in Hawai‘i, Guam, and other U.S.-managed lands in the Pacific Basin.

Duties may include conducting field trials to evaluate the efficacy and practicality of various control strategies for the invasive parakeets; tracking parakeet habitat uses, dispersal patterns, and overall range on the island; and developing an effective control plan for reducing the parakeet population on the island.
