Instructions

After you read the notes on this webpage, click on the phrase "LINK TO STUDY PACKET" (below). Another webpage will open and show you the list of study guides that make up a complete study packet for the five pest control subcategories described below under “Commercial 7a, Commercial 7b, Commercial 7c, Commercial 7d, and Commercial 7e subcategories”. They are about handling restricted use pesticides properly. You may use them as study guides for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s examinations for those five subcategories. To be certified to buy or use restricted use pesticides covered by any of those subcategories, you must pass the appropriate exam or exams to qualify.

Commercial 7a, Commercial 7b, Commercial 7c, Commercial 7d, and Commercial 7e subcategories

Commercial 7a, 7b, and 7c applicators are licensed pest control operators employed by pest control companies.

Commercial 7a fumigation pest control applicators use fumigant restricted use pesticides to control termites and other pests in or around food handling establishments, human dwellings, institutions such as schools and hospitals, industrial sites such as warehouses, grain elevators, and any other structures and adjacent area, public or private. They use the pesticides for protection of stored, processed or manufactured products.

Commercial 7b termite pest control applicators use restricted use pesticides (other than fumigant restricted use pesticides) to control subterranean and drywood termites in or around human dwellings, institutions such as schools and hospitals, hotels, industrial sites, and any other structures and adjacent area, public or private.

Commercial 7c general pest control applicators use restricted use pesticides to control pests, in or around food establishments, human dwellings, institutions such as schools, hospitals, industrial sites such as warehouses, and any other structures and adjacent area, public or private; and for the protection of stored, processed or manufactured products, excluding those applicators certified in category 3 and subcategories 7a and 7b.

Commercial 7d institutional pest control applicators use restricted use pesticides exclusive of fumigants to control pests at institutions (e. g., schools, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, industrial sites), or establishments (e.g., grain elevators, restaurants, bakeries, fast food outlets) where they are employed.

Commercial 7e vault fumigation pest control subcategory applicators use fumigant restricted use pesticides in vaults or chambers to control pests in agricultural commodities or structural materials.

If none of those subcategory descriptions describes the work you do with pesticides, you may need to be certified in a different subcategory or an additional category. To learn more about categories or subcategories of certification, consult an environmental health specialist at one of these Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture telephone numbers (area code 808):

Why become certified?

Being certified for a commercial 7 applicator subcategory has two benefits in Hawaii. (1) It allows you to buy, use, or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides covered by the subcategory. (2) It allows you to qualify to conduct pesticide safety training for an agricultural “worker” or pesticide “handler” at an agricultural site where a pesticide is used for producing agricultural plants. This safety training is required by a federal regulation called the Worker Protection Standard or WPS.

Certification Procedure

To become certified for any of the commercial 7 pest control subcategories, you must pass the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture's certification examination, complete and submit an application form, and pay the fees. You must be at least 18 years old when you take the exam. The Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture staff will score your exam and if you pass, qualify you to get a plastic-coated card as proof of your certification. The card will show your name, picture, signature, certification number, your applicator category, and an expiration date. (It expires after five years.) You can show your card when you buy restricted use pesticides in Hawaiʻi.

Examination for certification

Make an appointment to take an examination either by calling an environmental health specialist at one of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture offices listed above or by using the Department’s webpage “Pesticide Education Portal” at:

https://inforps-dp.hawaii.gov/PesticidesEducation/#/homepage

The examination tests your ability to interpret pesticide labels and apply label information to pest management problems. It covers proper handling, storage, and disposal, first aid, calibration, laws and regulations, emergency response, pesticides in the environment, identification and life cycles of pests, and pesticide application equipment and techniques.

Fees for an examination and a certification card will be collected by the person who conducts the exam or issues the card. For more information about fees, consult an environmental health specialist at one of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture offices listed above.
