Instructions

After you read the notes on this webpage, click on the LINK TO STUDY PACKET below. Another webpage will open and show you the list of study guides that make up a complete study packet for the commercial 5 aquatic pest control category. They are about handling restricted use pesticides properly. You may use them as study material for the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture’s examination for the commercial 5 category. You must pass both parts of that exam to qualify to be certified to buy or use restricted use pesticides covered by that category.

Commercial 5 category

Commercial 5 aquatic pest control applicators use or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides purposefully applied to standing or running water, excluding applicators engaged in public health related activities included in the commercial 5 category.

If this category description does not describe the work you do with pesticides, you may need to be certified in a different category or an additional category. To learn more about categories of certification, consult an environmental health specialist at one of these Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture telephone numbers (area code 808):

Why become certified?

Being certified as a commercial 5 applicator allows you to buy, use, or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides covered by that category.

Certification Procedure

To become certified for the commercial 5 aquatic pest control category, you must pass the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture’s two-part certification examination, complete and submit an application form, and pay the fees. You must be at least 18 years old when you take the exam. The Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture staff will score your exam and if you pass, qualify you to get a plastic-coated card as proof of your certification. The card will show your name, picture, signature, certification number, your applicator category, and an expiration date. You can show your card when you buy restricted use pesticides in Hawaiʻi. It expires after five years.

Examination for certification

Sign up for an examination date either by using the Department's web portal at https://inforps-dp.hawaii.gov/PesticidesEducation/#/homepage, or by contacting an environmental health specialist at one of the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture offices listed above. Ask about signing up for the restricted use pesticide certification exam for the commercial 5 aquatic pest control category.

The examination tests your ability to interpret pesticide labels and apply label information to pest management problems. It covers proper handling, storage, and disposal, first aid, calibration, laws and regulations, emergency response, and pesticides in the environment.

Fees for examinations and certification cards will be collected by the person who conducts the exams or issues the certification card. For more information about fees, consult an environmental health specialist at one of the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture offices, listed above.
