Fulbright scholar Md Tofazzal Islam, who is internationally known for his work on molecular cross-talks between plants and peronosporomycete phytopathogens, will present two lectures, “Genomic Analyses and Open Data Sharing for Understanding Biology and Mitigation of Worrisome Wheat Blast in Bangladesh and Asia” on Friday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m. and “Plant Probiotic Bacteria as Tools for Biorational Management of Phytopathogens” on Monday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m.

A team of Biological Engineering students won first place in the American Water Works Association “Fresh Ideas” contest with their design for small-scale water treatment systems for Waikiki’s Ala Wai Canal.

Blaire Langston (NREM) and project partner Erika Peralta received a Green Student Leader award for their campus waste-reduction and student-sustainability initiatives. The award, in the amount of $1,000, was from Johnson Controls.

Over 500 students and teachers attended the Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day event at the Urban Garden Center to learn about the importance of agriculture and the environment in the community and to find out more about career opportunities in agriculture and environmental studies in Hawai‘i.
