A Speech Worth Hearing

FDM alumna and award-winning author Janet Mock will be the commencement speaker at UHM’s graduation ceremony in December. Janet is a writer, cultural commentator, and advocate for transgender women’s rights. Her coming-of-age memoir, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More, debuted at No. 19 on the New York Times Best Sellers list in 2014, and her follow-up memoir, Surpassing Certainty, was released last year to glowing reviews; Kirkus called it a “defining chronicle of strength and spirit…brimming with liberated self-discovery.” Janet has been called one of “the most influential people on the Internet” and one of “12 new faces of black leadership” by TIME and was featured in Variety magazine’s 2017 “Power of Women.” At the Women’s March on Washington, she gave a stirring speech calling for an “intersectional and inclusive” women’s movement that embraces all women, including LGBTQ women, undocumented and disabled women, and sex workers: “I stand here today, most of all, because I am my sister’s keeper,” she proclaimed. Her speech at UH should be just as inspirational! Learn more at the UHM Commencement page.
