Diversifying Our Economy

With tourism down and its recovery timeline uncertain, how can local agriculture fill the commercial void and help Hawai‘i stay on its feet economically?

The answers aren’t easy or without controversy, says CTAHR Dean Nicholas Comerford, who was Monday’s guest on Hawai‘i Public Radio.

To support the growth of agriculture and its contribution to our gross domestic product (GDP), he believes government leaders should identify those farmers who are already commercially successful, and give them the support they need to overcome barriers to expansion. And they should be open to value-added propositions and new technologies.

“The possibility is there,” he said. “The big question is, ‘How much can it actually do?’ That’s going to depend on the farmers, the people who actually know how to run a business and are actually looking to increase their business.”
