Food Safety in Aquaponics

There will be a free online webinar on “Challenges and Opportunities for Implementing Food Safety Programs in Commercial Aquaponic Production of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables” on Friday, August 24, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. You can register here. The webinar features present and former faculty and staff from the college, including Extension agent Lynn Nakamura-Tengan, former Extension specialist Bradley “Kai” Fox, who now teaches sustainable agriculture at Windward Community College, and former academic support specialist Luisa Castro, who is now the agricultural food safety program manager for the HDOA. The webinar will cover such topics as Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and the Produce Safety Rule, how they differ from each other, and how each pertains to aquaponics. It will give an update on DOH regulations regarding aquaponics, address potential food-quality process concerns and food safety hazards, and discuss best practices for managing fish in aquaponic systems.
