We are saddened to report the passing of CTAHR alumnus Lyle Wong, a strong advocate for Hawai‘i agriculture. Dr. Wong, 74, passed away in Honolulu on December 25, 2018. The son of Look Hing Wong and Pauline Yamauchi, he is survived by his wife Susan, children Michael and Rebecca, and grandchildren Abigail and Bjorn. Dr. Wong earned a BS with honors from UH, followed by an MS and PhD from the University of California at Irvine. After doing post-doctoral research at Rice University, he returned to Hawai‘i in 1976 to head the Epidemiological Studies Program at the UH Pacific Biomedical Research Center. He subsequently joined the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture as Pesticide Branch chief. He was director of Environmental Affairs for Dole Packaged Foods from 1984 to 1991, then rejoined the DOA as Plant Industry Division administrator. After retiring in 2012, he took a position as the radiation safety officer for Pa‘ina Hawaii in order to foster larger markets for local produce. Those who knew him remember him as an attentive parent and partner, a thoughtful and caring individual to all, and a genuinely nice person. Services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Central Union Church Atherton Memorial Chapel, with visitation at 10:30 a.m. and service at 11:30 a.m., with reception to follow.
