There will be a statewide training for growers on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)’s Produce Safety Rule on Friday, December 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the UH Maui College’s Community Service Building #205. This training is especially timely in light of the recent warning against eating romaine, since it will help growers understand FSMA requirements and potential food safety risks on the farm. It will teach participants about food and produce safety in terms of worker health and hygiene, soil amendments, agricultural water, postharvest handling and sanitation, wildlife and domesticated animals, and how to develop a farm food safety plan. This is an approved FSMA Produce Safety Rule training, and since all non-exempt farms are required to have at least one owner or manager on site who has taken such a training, it will be helpful for growers and producers to attend. Besides, everyone can benefit from learning about food safety practices! There will be optional farm visits on Saturday, December 15, that will offer hands-on training to identify specific food safety risks and develop individualized corrective measures to reduce them. The training is $150, which will include lunch and drinks; the optional farm visits are $30. Limited scholarships are available through the Hawai‘i Farm Bureau and Hawaii Farmers Union United. For more information, you can contact Extension agent Lynn Nakamura-Tengan at (808) 244-3242, ext. 222 (Maui) or lynnnaka@hawaii.edu.
