Perspectives on Natural Resources

Make sure you make time for the offerings in this semester’s NREM seminar series! The seminars will be held weekly from 3:30 to 4:20 p.m. on Wednesdays in St. John 011. There will be a special mini-series on “Science & the Legislature” on September 12, September 26, and October 10, which will explore how research can best inform effective policies. It will feature presentations by Stacy Evensen, who has decades’ worth of experience working with the State legislative process; Dean Comerford, who has spent over a decade liaising between academic institutions and State legislatures in Florida and Hawai‘i; and Sen. Mike Gabbard, who has served as a Hawai‘i state senator since 2006 and is currently the chair of the Committee on Agriculture and the Environment. The first seminar of the series, on September 5, is “Problem-Solving Through Interdisciplinary Research,” presented by Travis Idol (pictured), Catherine Chan, and Carl Evensen (all NREM), followed by the first in the Legislature series, “Science & the Legislature: Navigating the Legislative Process—Do's and Don’ts,” on September 12 with Stacy Evensen, and “Riverine Analysis Across Scales: From Global Scale Sediment Modeling to Event Scale Flood Mapping” on September 19 with Sagy Cohen, an associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Alabama.
