He Doesn’t Kid About Orchids
Former Extension agent Norm Bezona took the opportunity afforded by the upcoming Kona Daifukuji Orchid Show and Sale (it’s this Sunday, August 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to discuss many aspects of orchid selection, care, and culture in his column in the Hawaii Tribune Herald. He explained that orchids should be given as much light as they can take, but just how much might be a matter of trial and error: too much shade results in fewer flowers, but too much sun can cause scorching in the foliage. It’s important not to overwater orchids, since that can make their roots rot, he cautions, but they still need more water in the summer, and they need more if they’re actively growing than if they’re in a semi-dormant state. Find out more about how to care for your exotic friends here—and if you’re in Kona, check out the show!
