Student Centered

Some brave and helpful undergraduate students—Michelle Au (Tropical Agriculture and the Environment), Lian Huang (Biological Engineering), Robert Suzuki, Jr. (Human Development and Family Studies), and Cody Ching (Animal Sciences)—shared their experience of CTAHR in a live webinar on student life to promote the undergraduate programs. The webinar link was sent to all the students who have been admitted to CTAHR, some of whom submitted live questions and got comprehensive and reassuring answers. Michelle, Leanne, Robert, and Cody discussed what they like about their majors and the college, what sorts of academic, financial, and social support CTAHR offers, what sorts of clubs they belong to, what the dorms are like, and many other issues prospective students would want to know about.

In another student-focused event, the Academic and Student Affairs Office hosted its second CTAHR student–faculty luncheon, where freshmen and transfer students had the opportunity to meet and chat with faculty members from CTAHR majors. In a speed networking session, faculty and CTAHR adminsitrators spent five minutes introducing themselves to small groups of students for four rounds. Over lunch, students shared their ideas about the kinds of events that are most appealing to them. The students agreed that they appreciate having events like these but would also like to meet CTAHR upperclassmen both within and outside of their majors, as well as alumni. They said social media platforms such as Instagram are the best way to reach a wider audience of students.
