The recent COVID-19-induced shortages caused by bulk-buying of dry goods and frozen foods haven’t yet extended to the availability of fresh greens and other produce in Hawai‘i. However, with many folks staying away from supermarkets to minimize risk, the idea of growing your own food is taking on a whole new dimension.
It’s not easy to find locally developed seeds that will grow into robust plants and perform well in Hawai‘i’s unique tropical conditions. Or vegetables that are resistant to local pests and plant diseases.
Fortunately for professional growers and backyard enthusiasts, the UH Seed Laboratory has just the answer. As part of the College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources, we provide a wide selection of vegetable and fruit seeds that have been bred and tested to grow well here and that never fail to strike interest among those souls willing to brave the soil, bugs, and other challenges that farmers face every day of their busy lives.
Lettuce, tomatoes, eggplants, supersweet corn, and green onion are just a few of the varieties we offer. They come in individual home garden packets for $1.50 each, and we ship them directly to your home address.
