Get Schooled in the Dirt

Feel like getting your hands in the soil and learning useful skills while you’re at it? Volunteers are needed to assist with fieldwork for a soil science project at UHM focusing on root competition between Pacific Island crops.

The project is currently entering the “destructive sampling” phase, which involves root coring and biomass analysis. Volunteers will be trained in these and other field techniques—this is a great opportunity for students who are interested in plant and soil science and are looking for more hands-on experience and technical training.

The study site is located at the Magoon Research Facility, in the NREM/SOFT fields behind Noelani Elementary School. Work will be taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days, starting on Sunday, October 20, and continuing until work has been completed.

Interested volunteers should contact Maxwell Bendes at (510)-612-7495 or mbendes@hawaii.edu
