The Art of Science

In conjunction with the Tester Symposium, students are invited to submit art that coordinates with the spirit of science and highlights the natural beauty of Hawai‘i. Students may submit artwork (paintings, sketches, video clips, photos, sculptures, etc.) to each of the following categories:

Ocean Life: Life in Hawai‘i is intrinsically tied to the ocean. Whether it’s by capturing sunlight filtering through the water, mantas dancing at night, or waves crashing on the beach, submissions to this category are focused on highlighting the beauty and power of the ocean.

Ecosystems of the ‘Aina: Submissions to this category showcase the majestic Hawaiian landscapes, from jagged cliffs to lush rainforests. Whether it’s a landscape shot or a close up of a lizard, if it showcases life on land, submit to this category.

People and the Environment: People are inextricably linked with the environment; from fishing to wind farms. For some it means survival, for others it means profit. Submissions to this category will highlight these interactions between humans and the environment, in whatever form they may come.

You can submit your artwork or photos here.

Everyone is welcome to submit one piece of artwork per category (three total). Only one art piece per category may be submitted. Artwork must be original content created within the past year (2018–2019).

Submissions are due by April 1 at 11:59 pm and will be displayed throughout the symposium. The top photos from each category will be announced at the end of the symposium on April 12. Winning artwork will be displayed on the Biology Department website and may be used for UH promotional purposes. Visit the Tester Symposium website for more information. You can email Noam Altman-Kurosaki (noama@hawaii.edu) with any additional questions.
