3MEP JUDGING INFORMATION

The competition follows the spirit of the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT)® competition that originated at the University of Queensland, Australia. This session is an opportunity for all students to showcase their innovative and significant research to a wider audience.

3MEP is not an exercise in trivializing or ‘dumbing down’ research, but rather challenge for students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a general audience. IT’S TOUGHTER THAN YOU THINK!

 

RULES:

  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animation or 'movement' of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning).
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • No identifiers (Dept. or candidature; name is ok)
  • Presentations are limited to THREE(3) minutes maximum and competitors exceeding THREE(3) minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be in spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when the presenter starts their presentation through movement or speech.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA:

1. Comprehensions and Content:

  • Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background to the research question being address and its significance?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the key results of the research including conclusions and outcomes?
  • Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
  • Was the thesis topic, key results, significance, and outcomes communicated in language appropriate for a non-specialist audience?
  • Did the speaker avoid scientific jargon, explain terminology and provide adequate background information to illustrate points?
  • Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

2. Engagement Communication:

  • Did the presenter make the audience want to know more?
  • Was the presenter careful not to trivialize or generalize their research?
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
  • Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience's attention for the duration?
  • Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?
  • Did the Power Point slide (1) enhance the presentation was it clear, legible, and concise?

 

FORMAT OF THE COMPETITION:

The 30th CTAHR Student Research Symposium College Awards winners will be judged on their 3 min. presentation by a panel of 5 judges, using the above criteria. The judges determine the winners of the awards below:

 

Awards:

  • Winner categories: (i) PhD., (ii) M.S. (iii) UG @ $1250.00
  • People’s Choice $1250.00

Note: The People’s Choice, together being a category winner, is allowed.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE: Important aspect of the competition is the People’s Choice award. The audience is asked to vote on who they thought gave the most convincing 3MEP presentation (based on the understanding the criteria (outlined above). Audience members will vote via a ballot provided for their favorite presenter.
