In Hawaii, the Elemental Excelerator, is a non-profit funded program supported by a diverse coalition of utility partners. This program funds 12-15 start-up companies for up to $1 million each to improve systems that impact people’s lives, energy, water, agriculture, and transportation. The coalition includes the U.S. Nay, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Hawaii State Energy Office, General Electric, Blackstone Charitable Foundation, Hawaii Community Foundation, Tokyo Electric Power Company, Hawaiian Electric Industries, DENSO (A global automotive component manufacturer in Japan), Vector (New Zealand’s Energy distributor), and ENEL(an Italian multinational manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas). The program is looking for its cohort of ideas/companies to support in 2018.
Modern marine biotechnology was first developed in the U.S. and Australia during the 1970’s and 1980’s. In the last four decades, there have been major technological breakthroughs which have resulted from discoveries of how organisms assemble silicon at low input energies for low cost catalytic nanofabrication, sustainable aquaculture, algal biofuel production, and biomedical compounds for human health (Greco and Cinquerani, 2016).
Contributing to these discoveries are scientists of the Asia Pacific region and Hawaii will be the site of the 11th Asia Pacific Marine Biotechnology Conference (APMBC) at the East West Center on May 21-24, 2017.
The number of attendees have ranged from 200-300 with strong student participation at meetings that have taken place in Japan, India, Thailand, the Philippines, and Korea. The topics include biotechnology of microalgae, extremophiles and metagenomics, marine bioproducts, marine bioactive compounds, aquaculture, biofouling, biomineralization and biomaterials, marine biodiversity and bioinformatics, and marine pathogens and toxins. Among these attendees, we expect 40-50 students who will participate in the program with oral presentations. The APMBC Board has encouraged the student presenters to gain experience in oral presentations and thus, we are seeking funding for student awards to recognize their efforts.
We look forward to an exciting meeting in beautiful Honolulu.

5. Marine environmental Omics and bioinformatics (metagenomics and environmental DNA)
6. Marine bioactive compounds (cosmeceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals) and biomaterials
7. Algal biology and biotechnology
8. Marine bioenergy
9. Marine microbiology and biotechnology
10. Marine biotechnology for environmental toxicology and environmental conservation
11. Molecular sensing technology
12. Biomineralization
13. Marine symbiosis
14. Policy and legal aspects of marine biotechnology in bio-business
Brief History of APMBC
The Asia-Pacific Marine Biotechnology Conference (APMBC) was organized as a forum for the Asia Pacific Society of Marine Biotechnology (APSMB). Its basic purpose has been to provide a meeting place for the exchange of information, ideas, and technologies in marine biotechnology.
The APSMB was formally constituted and introduced on July 14, 1994 by the Marine Biotechnology Institute of Japan. At that constitution meeting, two symposia were arranged; the first symposia took place in September 1995 in Shimizu (Shizuoka Prefecture), Japan. The second symposia took place in Phuket, Thailand in 1997. The members of APSMB have included Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Palau, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, New Zealand, and the United States. There has been a total of 10 Asia-Pacific Marine Biotechnology Conferences and the 11th will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 21-24, 2017.
At the APMBC, the forums have focused on algal biotechnology, aquaculture biotechnology, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, biotechnological development of marine organisms for bio-energy, foods, pharmaceutical products, and environmental management, and aquatic models for human disease research. These meetings are endeavors that will lead to increased progress in research and technological development in marine biotechnology for the nations in the Asia-Pacific Region.
