The Return of GENE-ius Day

After a hiatus due to the ongoing you-know-what, the terrific GENE-ius Day Program is back up and running for the Spring 2022 semester!

The first lab was held last Saturday for students in grades 1-12. Prior to the lab, their parents picked up activity boxes that were specially prepared to maintain the kind of hands-on, engaging experience that makes GENE-ius Day so special. The program was modified into virtual teaching for this semester.

GENE-ius Day, which Associate Dean Ania Wieczorek began in 2006, aims to educate local keiki in their corresponding grade level’s science standards, as well as introduce them to careers in STEM and concepts they can use outside of school. Each student participant touches base on many branches of science, including forensics, biology, chemistry, and more.

“We are excited for this upcoming semester and look forward to educating the younger generation about science!” says Ania.

*On a personal note, I’m the proud father of an aerospace engineer who is currently launching 48 satellites into orbit for Lockheed Martin Space. My daughter’s love of science was sparked in part from her elementary school experience in GENE-ius Day. Mahalo nui loa to Dean Ania and the staff of CTAHR’s Academic and Student Affairs Office for setting her on this great path.
