Victor Duzerah Phillips, III
We are saddened to report the passing of Victor Phillips, who served as CTAHR’s Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs in the 1990s before moving to Wisconsin to become Dean of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. He died of pneumonia last week at 68. Dr. Phillips earned his MS degree at Washington University and his PhD in ecology at the University of Colorado. He founded the Global Environmental Management Education Center (GEM) at the University of Wisconsin, securing more than $10 million in external grants for this center. He consulted internationally on forestry and permaculture practices to advance resource conservation and sustainability and was primary or contributing author on more than 170 scientific papers and articles. There will be no public memorial, but donations can be made through Global Giving to benefit the Dryland Natural Resources Center, whose founder, Nicholas Syano, studied under Dr. Phillips and continues his work in supporting reforestation efforts in Kenya.
