This 9-week Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates summer internship is a federally funded program that provides interdisciplinary research experiences for students in the fields of agriculture, plant science, and data science. We train you to design, measure, analyze, and interpret data from agricultural science through an active learning process (classroom and research). We provide professional development workshops, where you learn about data-related agricultural job opportunities, develop critical thinking, improve communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills that allows you to be globally competitive in a knowledge-based economy that is in high demand.

When and where does the 9-week program takes place?

The program takes place from June 2 - August 3, 2024 at the University Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.

What does the program involve?

You will become part of a vibrant, cutting-edge research team led by an interdisciplinary team of mentors who will work with you on designated projects that combine plant, data, and computer sciences. Through this internship, you will develop interdisciplinary skills in plant, data, and computer sciences, as well as career development training from ag professionals that will prepare them for a career in agriculture, data science, and beyond. The internship is meant to introduce you to this field, so mastery in this area is not required. Bring your excitement and interest and we will teach you the rest!

What is the compensation for participation?

Participants will get a $4,500 base stipend for participating in the program. In addition, the program will cover food, lodging, and travel expenses that totals to a support package of $9,000 per student. What this means is that you start out with a $4,500 stipend, and if you decide to live off-campus, you will be reimbursed an additional $3,500 for rent and approximately $1,000 travel to UH (if applicable).

Who should apply?

Any undergraduate students enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year accredited college/university with an interest in plant biology, data or computer science. All you need is to bring your excitement and interest in plant and data science!

Pacific Islanders and underrepresented minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.
