RESEARCH

Our REEU program is different than the typical summer research program where each student is assigned to a lab where they conduct their research mostly independently of their peers. We based our program on an active cohort learning model. What this means is that all students in the program participate in classroom learning, research activities, and fieldtrips together. Each person is responsible for a part of the research that when combined together forms a strong and cohesive project. We found that this model stimulate cohesiveness, teamwork, and stimulating scientific discussions.

ACTIVE LEARNING

Our program involves active learning approaches aimed stimulate your interests and introduce you to a career in the natural and data sciences. Throughout the eight weeks, we will work along the active learning continuum. This will involve your participation in interactive workshops to learn the basics of root and shoot phenotyping and image analysis. You will also collaborate with your peers to collect plant measurements and explore practice analyzing real datasets. As a team, your cohort will seek to find meaning in the data as you tackle fundamental research questions in plant biology, culminating with sharing your results at a special poster session of UH Mānoa's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Symposium.

FIELDTRIPS

On Fridays, the group will have an opportunity to visit local producers, research entities, and natural areas around the island of O'ahu. These activities are great opportunities for you to get to know your peers better -- and take goofy memorable pictures.
