Maui County Administrator Thanks Exceptional Staff Members

Submitted by Cynthia Reeves, PhD, MPH, retired Maui County Administrator

Maui County Administrator Thanks Exceptional Staff Members

Every year the Maui County Administrator identifies those who have gone above and beyond their typical job-related duties to help Maui County be successful. This year, the Maui County Administrator’s award is presented to Recruitment and Fiscal Specialist Carol Oshiro for her efforts to ensure our most critical purchase orders went through at the end of the year and our vendors got paid. She was responsible for ensuring that our Haleakalā Station cottage had both electricity and plumbing and that a dying tree was cut down, so the cottage was not destroyed by the huge falling cypress branches that had already damaged the roof. This was finally accomplished just as a hurricane was approaching.

Because of her efforts Maui County was able to get the necessary work done to ensure they were able to host a cottage resident in a safe and fully functional facility. This will greatly enhance on-site security. They have already noticed a significant decrease in cars parked at the Station entrance and have had zero incidents of vandalism or theft since the resident has been in place, saving CTAHR potentially thousands of dollars. Carol has now also taken over the responsibility of managing a nearly $100K grant from the Maui County Department of Agriculture to install fencing at the Haleakalā Station—so it is true, her abilities know no bounds.

Carol not only models the concept of superb customer service, but she also entirely embodies the term. With her ever-readiness to assist, trouble-shoot, and brainstorm solutions to whatever problem comes her way, she is the ultimate super-resource within CTAHR.

Administrator's Recognition Awards were also presented to Administrative Assistant Kassie Bode on Maui and Administrative Specialist Chiemi Talon on Molokaʻi, as the World’s Best Fiscal Warriors. They worked hand-in-hand with Carol, tackling fiscal-related issues at the Maui County grassroots level. Because of their efforts, Maui County was able to purchase critically needed goods and services for both Maui and Molokaʻi, and were even able to purchase a new tractor and other needed equipment replacements. As issues continually arose, both Kassie and Chiemi handled them with grace and forbearance, while endeavoring to move the Maui County mission forward.
