TPSS PhD student Emily Teng is featured in an article in the magazine Greenhouse Management that showcases the qualities that led her to be honored with last year’s Ka Hana Po‘okela student service award. Emily works at Pang’s Nursery while completing her doctoral research in how light and temperature affect pigmentation in poinsettia bracts, but she still makes plenty of time to give back to the college and mentor younger students. 

Marie Kainoa Fialkowski Revilla (HNFAS) has been accepted as a 2019–2021 Diversity Leader with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her application demonstrated exemplary commitment to the profession, as well as a desire to grow as a leader within it. During the two-year Diversity Leaders Program, she will attend cutting-edge educational sessions and network with esteemed colleagues to expand her knowledge of the Academy, further develop her leadership skills, and engage in one-on-one mentorship. Congratulations!

Suicide is the leading cause of fatal injuries among Hawai‘i residents, outpacing unintentional poisoning, drowning, car accidents, and homicides. To alert the community to the dangers of suicide and ways to help, Thao Le (HDFS) discussed teen suicide prevention and intervention and potential harmful consequences of overconsuming digital social media on two panels at the recent Hawai‘i Book and Music Festival. 

In “Pedagogy in Reminiscence and Life Review,” Lori Yancura, Andy Reilly, and Young Bahng (all FCS) discuss how reminiscence methodology, in the form of oral history or life story projects, can be used to offer students not only the experience of working with older adults and learning about historical events from those who experienced them but also the opportunity to apply course material to everyday environments. 

Budi Waluyo, a former PhD student of Sothy Eng (FCS), recently published a study based on his dissertation examining how an influential international scholarship program impacted the recipients’ capabilities, instead of looking at what’s typically measured, their economic success. It showed that fellows’ success in terms of life choices, capabilities, and achieved functioning was positively related to their impact on social justice.
