CTAHR Care Packages Adds CTAHR Cooking Show

The CTAHR Academic and Student Affairs Office along with FSHN Instructor Lara Hackney have expanded on the CTAHR Care Packages to include a live, instructor led cooking class.  As students pick up their traditional care package of dry goods, CTAHR Cooking Show participants also pick up fresh ingredients and materials for the cooking class.  Our November Cooking Show featured locally harvested carrots donated by GoFarm Hawaii.  FSHN Instructor Lara demonstrated to students how to oven roast their carrots, make a simple salad and dressing, as well as bake a carrot cake.  In addition to the recipes, Lara also demonstrated chopping techniques and incorporated nutritional information and fun facts into the session.

To get in the holiday spirit, the December Cooking Show focused on royal icing techniques.  All CTAHR Care Package recipients also received a cookie kit of freshly baked gingerbread cookies, multi colored royal icing, and a variety of sprinkles.  During the show, FSHN Instructor Lara demonstrated how to pipe and flood royal icing.  She also showed how to do wet on wet icing to create hearts and flower designs.

Students have expressed their gratitude for the care packages, with one student saying it was the highlight of their week!  Cooking show participants have greatly enjoyed the classes and look forward to future classes.  Our next care package distribution will be on January 14, 2021 with an Indian themed cooking class on January 15, 2021.  Register for your CTAHR Care Package and CTAHR Cooking Show.

CTAHR Care Packages and Cooking Shows would not be possible without the generous support of the CTAHR Academic and Student Affairs Office, FSHN Instructor Lara Hackney, CTAHR Alumni and Friends, SAPFB, ASUH, GoFarm Hawaii, Urban Garden Center Fruit Hui, CTAHR Cooperative Extension, Oahu County Administrator Jari Sugano, CTAHR UH Foundation Director of Development Audrey Hirayama, and Aloha Harvest.
