Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 9, because the Urban Garden Center is once again holding educational workshops for the public, this time on orchids and composting.
Can’t wait? Guests are welcome to arrive early for a guided tour of the Honolulu Rose Society gardens beginning at 9 am, visit the Master Gardeners’ “Got a Plant Question?” booth, and check out the interesting “Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle” display.
10:00 am – Honohono Orchid Workshop
Bernard Cabilao of the Mililani Orchid Club will conduct an orchid class on the care of honohono orchids. After the class, you’ll get to pot up an orchid keiki to take home. $15.
8:30 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. – Bucket Composting
Learn to create compost! This bucket composting system is perfect for any type of garden, and ideal for persons with limited mobility and strength, as this requires no turning, hauling, or moving plant waste around your property.
Master Gardener Bonnie McCann will lead this 60-min outdoor demonstration to show how to make and install a bucket system, what to put into your compost bucket, and how to harvest completed compost. Bonus: when used properly, this system does not allow vectors, cats/dogs, or CRB into the pile. Bonnie’s demonstration will be held in the UGC’s education garden, which has had bucket systems in place for over two years – with great success. $7 adult; $3 child.
Please note: Entrance to the UGC is limited to workshop registered guests only. Please carpool when possible. Also, a limited supply of composting buckets, CTAHR seeds, fruit fly bait, and vermicast will be available for sale and/or a donation. A free seed giveaway is courtesy of Foodland Markets.
