A Leader in Her Field

Marie Kainoa Fialkowski Revilla (HNFAS) has been accepted as a 2019–2021 Diversity Leader with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her application demonstrated exemplary commitment to the profession, as well as a desire to grow as a leader within it. During the two-year Diversity Leaders Program, she will attend cutting-edge educational sessions and network with esteemed colleagues to expand her knowledge of the Academy, further develop her leadership skills, and engage in one-on-one mentorship. Congratulations!

NIFA (Heart) CHL

The CTAHR Children’s Healthy Living (CHL) Program headed by Rachel Novotny (HNFAS) was recognized April 25 by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). CHL won the Mission Integration of Research, Education, and Extension Award for working across all three of NIFA’s mission areas to produce positive outcomes in agriculture, the environment, communities, or people.

The Taste of Hawai‘i

Culinology student Alan Martin (right) won first place and $1,000 in the 2019 King’s Hawaiian Product Development Competition, which challenged entrants to develop a Hawai‘i-inspired, shelf-stable, portable snack for kids or college-age students. Another HNFAS student, Mari McClenney (left), was a top-six finalist.

The Best Food

Getting hungry? Well, if you’re on the UHM campus, you’re in luck—did you know the campus’s food is rated as the best in the country, according to Forbes Magazine? And this is thanks in no small part to Donna Ojiri, an alumna of HNFAS’ FSHN program, who runs the Sodexo Hawaii food service program.
