Keep on Sewing
In early April, Provost Michael Bruno reached out to the Dean of CTAHR to see if we could help sew masks for the 300 essential facilities workers on UH Manoa Campus that had been working throughout the pandemic to keep everything in order for us. As Fashion Design and Merchandising is one of our programs, it was an immediate “Yes, we can!.”
Over 500 yards of fabric were donated by CTAHR Alumni of FDM, Sylvia Kop, and in one month we were able to produce over 600 masks so that each facilities employee could have 2.
It could not have been done without the help of numerous CTAHR Alumni, students, and university and community partners.
Two of our faculty, Ryan Kurasaki (BE) & Minako McCarthy (FDM), even jumped in and made 460 of the total.
We will continue to make masks to support other UH departments with the generous support of the facilities department that will employ three students through the summer.
