Hunters and Researchers Collaborate to Raise Rapid Ohia Death Awareness

We all care about our native Hawaiian forests. That fact was illustrated by a very exciting collaboration between the local Hawaiʻi Island hunting group Mountain Madness and our partners at the U.S. Forest Service Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry who co-hosted a hunting tournament this past weekend. In addition to good food, native forest activities for the keiki and live Hawaiian music, researchers were able to collect soil samples from caught pigs to help shed light on the idea that other animals in the forests could be moving Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death disease. The hunters also very generously donated a portion of the proceeds to ROD research and outreach! Mahalo nui to the many hunters, community members, and our partners who helped make the day a success!
