Started in 2018, the University of Hawaiʻi's Plant Sciences Symposium Series is part of an international symposia series spanning multiple universities and topics facilitated by Corteva Agriscience.
Each year, students are encouraged to choose their university's symposium topic. This year's theme, "Building a Better Tomorrow: Leveraging the Power of Plant Natural Products," will focus on the many varied ways that plant natural products can be used for human benefit.
Plants are expert chemists capable of rendering a diverse array of chemical constituents that is vast and astounding. Humans have leveraged plant-derived chemicals for food, medicine, pest-control, weaponry, and countless other uses since the dawn of time. The processes that lead to these chemicals are complex and influenced by a myriad of factors, but understanding them has led to amazing scientific breakthroughs.
This symposium will feature local, national, and international experts discussing the ways the chemistry of nature can be used to aid humankind.
