Aloha! My name is Savannah Katulski and I am privileged to be your new Livestock Extension Agent on Kaua`i. I want to introduce myself, the direction of Cooperative Extension on Kaua`i, and establish an open line of communication between myself and you all, as stakeholders.

I grew up in the chilly state of Michigan, where I was extensively involved in livestock 4-H; raising small animals, hogs, and beef cattle. I attended Michigan State University and was involved in the dairy industry, collegiate dairy cattle judging, and internships where I gained experience in trace mineral supplementation and intensive grazing practices.

After I earned my Bachelors, I moved to Kansas and attended Kansas State University where I completed my Masters in Animal Science, with an emphasis on trace mineral nutrition in growing cattle. I am very excited to be a member of the Cooperative Extension team and look forward to working with you all!

Guinea grass (Panicum maximum) is a common grass on Kaua`i and is a valuable forage, if managed correctly. Guinea grass is sensitive to over-grazing, and can quickly grow beyond optimal grazing quality

What's in store...

Issue 2, Spring 2018

Livestock production on Kaua`i faces numerous challenges, and I don’t anticipate those challenges to dissipate any time soon. The good news is that Cooperative Extension is here to help. Here’s a look at what’s coming soon:

Forage Demonstration - Dr. Mark Thorne, Extension Specialist on the Big Island, myself, and other livestock agents across the islands will be collaborating on creating forage variety plots

to perform forage quality experiments and serve as a reference for those of you who seek to identify various forages in your pastures. Kaua`i’s plot will be located at the CTAHR Agriculture Research Center in Wailua. Look for updates on this project soon.

Pork Production Workshop As more piggeries develop on Kaua`i, distribution of information on swine health, nutrition, management, etc. will need to increase as well. I will be creating a workshop this year which will serve as an introduction to pork production; where various faculty and industry individuals will give talks on several aspects of the pork industry in Hawaii.

Another pretty exciting part of my job is providing support for Livestock 4-H Clubs here. This year 4-H members participated in lamb and goat clinics at Omao Ranch Lands and

Friendship Do’s Ranch, respectively. In addition to clinics, youth were trained in livestock quality assurance, an educational topic focusing on the importance of good animal.

husbandry and stewardship. If you have any youth interested in any of Kaua`i’s 4-H programs, please contact me and I can get you connected with our club leaders.
