4-H sews a thousand-plus masks

Helping Hands

“Hands” is one of the four “H’s” of 4-H, and O‘ahu 4-H youth and volunteers have been putting their hands to good use in this time of high need! Over the past month, they’ve sewn more than 1,000 masks and donated them to Central Medical Center, Kaiser Moanalua, University Health Partners of Hawai‘i, individual health care workers, military personnel, postal workers, Extension agents and staff, Urban Garden Center volunteers, and UH Facilities staff. They’ve even donated their carefully made masks to a councilmember who passed them out to houseless individuals.

Manawalea 4-H Club leader Melessa Casey says her two children, both 4-H members, “feel good about themselves and happy to give them to people in need.” Her son, Zachariah, shared, "It's tricky but fun at the same time.”

“Gifting us the face masks helps us manage this ongoing issue,” a Central Medical Center staff member told the Happy Honus 4-H Club in Kailua.

The youth and volunteers have committed to continuing to sew more masks and contribute them to those in need. Mahalo!
