Common feedstocks include herbaceous crops (e.g. sugarcane, energy cane, banagrass), short-rotation
woody crops (e.g. Eucalyptus, Leucaena), aquatic species (e.g. micro and macro algae), and oil bearing crops (e.g. oil palm, Jatropha).
Tropical C4 grasses are arguably the best biofuel crop for Hawaii and the tropics due to their high biomass yields, low input requirements, and suitability to modern commercial harvesting technology. The Department of Energy is supporting a CTAHR research project with focus on tropical C4 grasses that are common to tropical latitudes. Two such grasses are Pennisetum purpureum (Bana grass) and Megathyrsus maximus (Guinea grass). Both have been reported to generate as much as four times the amount of biomass per acre per year than switchgrass (Tew, 1988). To assess the potential of these C4 grasses and that of energycane and sugarcane as a lignocellulosic feedstock for biofuel and bioproduct production the project will conduct research in feedstock yield, quality, chemical composition, pretreatment, and biochemical and thermochemical conversion into biofuels and bioproducts.
