An important determination in the selection of bioenergy crops is the elemental chemistry of the biomass or oils produced.  Those with properties that allow for the efficient and economic conversion to biofuel would be preferred.  Conversion technologies are well known as either biochemical by hydrolysis or fermentation or thermochemical by hydrolysis, pyrolysis or gasification as shown in the chart below.  For oils extracted from oil seeds, the process is known as trans-esterification.
