ARCS Foundation Honolulu Chapter’s 2017 Scientist of the Year Dr. Richard Yanagihara will discuss Hantaviruses: A Personal Journey of Discovery and New Begninnings at a free pauhana talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 in the Agricultural Sciences Building on the UH Manoa campus. Hantaviruses are a relatively newly discovered genre spread by rodents with sometimes fatal consequences to humans.

GoFarm Hawai‘i kicks off a second Kohala Center cohort with a free AgCurious session at the North Hawai‘i Education and Research Center in Honoka‘a. A subsequent free four-week AgXposure will meet on Saturdays beginning September 30, followed by AgSchool for those interested in pursuing intensive hands-on five-month farmer training. For CTAHR, fall semester isn't officially underway until the welcome back event with its ice cream eating contest and other festivities. About 200 students, faculty, and staff turned out for the 27th annual event.

The Insectary Plants for Fruit and Vegetable Crops field day demonstrates how to use companion plants, living mulch, hedgerows, trap crops, and farmscaping to attract, feed, and shelter beneficial insect parasites, parasitoids, and predators.

Shooting the flume, picking tea, feeding cows and seeing octopi up close were just a few of the adventures as CTAHR students made friends and practiced team building on the 2017 Meaningful Experience tour to Kona and environs on Hawai‘i Island.
