A new infographic fact sheet by Ivette, Barbara DeBaryshe, and Hua Zan hopes to raise awareness of the current economic struggles in our state and bring them closer to the attention of lawmakers. The fact sheet, posted on COF’s website, uses data from the US Census Household Pulse Survey to highlight what local families are going through right now.
The pandemic is creating stress, keeping everyone in close quarters, and curtailing opportunities to get help and take a break from parenting. According to experts, all of these factors add up to a potential spike in child abuse. Center on the Family director Barbara DeBaryshe was interviewed for a UH News story on how to keep domestic life on an even keel during the crisis.
CTAHR’s Center on the Family has released its most recent Community Profile Series, which examines the well-being of communities throughout the state. The latest series, an expansion of work conducted in 2018, presents measures of quality of life and community well-being for 42 communities throughout the state, as well as state and county-level data.
Center on the Family specialist Sarah Yuan has been awarded a $750 scholarship by the Roy A. Goff Memorial Endowment Fund to participate in the National Conference of Epsilon Sigma Phi, the Extension Professionals’ Organization, in Colorado in October. As vice chair of the Hawaii ESP Chapter, Sarah is taking the lead on identifying and supporting professional-development training needs of Extension colleagues in Hawai‘i.
The Center on the Family, the state grantee for the nationwide KIDS COUNT project, has released the 30th edition of the KIDS COUNT® Data Book, an annual data study funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation that examines trends in child well-being. The Data Book uses 16 indicators to rank each state across four domains—economic well-being, education, health, and family and community. This year it shows that Hawai‘i ranks 24th of the 50 states in overall child well-being.
