Swine Extension can look back at a job well done, saving pigs from disease and producers from loss. When Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) first appeared in the Wai‘anae area in 1996, it caused devastating losses to swine farms. Swine specialist Halina Zaleski and then-Cooperative Extension veterinarian Brad LeaMaster responded by vaccinating all sows in the area to stop the spread of the disease.
Dr. Kan Sato, a professor of Animal Nutrition at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, will be giving a special seminar on “Molecular Nutrition: Interaction of Nutrients, Gene Regulations, and Performances.” He has over 20 years’ experience in research related to molecular nutrition and performance of animals.
Alumna Teresa Morishita has established a scholarship through UH Foundation. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a professor of Poultry Medicine & Food Safety at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine, she is a 1984 graduate of CTAHR’s undergrad Animal Sciences program and has fond memories of many ANSC faculty members.
Rajesh Jha (HNFAS) was recently appointed as a section editor in the area of Nutrition and Metabolism of the journal Poultry Science. This journal, published by the Poultry Science Association, is considered the best journal in the field globally. Rajesh also serves as associate editor for other two prestigious journals in the field, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and Animal Science Journal.
