New Produce and How to Eat It

Come to the delicious Variety Showcase

CTAHR’s beginning farmer-training program GoFarm Hawai‘i is teaming up with the Culinary Breeding Network to present the second annual Variety Showcase. Hosted by the Kapi’olani Community College Culinary Arts Program in collaboration with CTAHR, Hawaiian Seed Growers Network, and Farm Link Hawaii, it will feature unique and in-development fruits, vegetables, grains, and animal products along with traditional favorites, presented by those who grow them.

Enjoy a night at the Honolulu Symphony while learning about endangered native birds

Join in the avian excitement as the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra performs the Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds, an original set of works produced by Hawai‘i’s composers, artists, biologists, and educators! Melissa Price of CTAHR’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management is a creator of the concert project, bringing to it her perspective on conservation and wildlife management. It’s all happening November 5 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall!

If you’ve got any leftover blood to spare after being visited by the vampires on Halloween, consider donating it to a good cause at the CTAHR Blood Drive coming up on Tuesday, November 19! It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (not 3:30, as indicated on flyer), and it’s in QLC 411/412. Donors will receive thank you gifts, food, and other treats at the blood drive, plus the satisfaction of knowing theyʻve helped to save a life.

Failing memory, disorientation, and the other symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s can be as hard on family members and other loved ones as they are on those with the disease. Michael Cheang, associate professor at Human Development and Family Studies, will present a workshop on different strategies to communicate more effectively with elders who have Alzheimer’s disease and explain similarities and differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Biochemistry researcher will discuss oilseed biofuels

Interested in biofuels from oilseeds? Come to a special seminar in the TPSS Departmental Seminar Series, where Jay Thelen, a professor of biochemistry at the University of Missouri – Columbia, will be discussing “New Insights on the Regulation of de Novo Fatty Acid Synthesis in Plants.” Dr. Thelen’s lab studies how to leverage findings about the regulation of de novo fatty acid biosynthesis in plants to improve oil production.
