Volunteers helped grow and gather 14,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables to donate

On any given day, regardless of rain or blazing hot sun, you’ll find a dedicated group of volunteers in the Fruit Orchard. They maintain the grounds and trees, volunteering some 9,000 hours annually. They also collect surplus fruit and vegetables to donate to the Hawaiʻi Food Bank—a total of 14,000 pounds in 2019, and all of it fresh and nutritious!

New invasive avocado lace bug is reported on Oʻahu

The Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture has issued an alert about a new pest of avocado that has been reported in the Islands, the avocado lace bug (Pseudacysta perseae). First discovered in Pearl City in December, it has since been seen in Waialua as well. So far, it has only been found on O‘ahu.

600+ Attend CTAHR’s Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day

Morning sunlight bouncedoff animated faces as the busloads of 5th-graders disembarked at the Oʻahu Urban Garden Center. The occasion was Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day, and the 555 students and 48 teachers on this November 2 field trip were in for a special treat. Awaiting them were rows of outdoor exhibits, hands-on presentations, fun activities, food samples—even a small pen with live goats.
