Celebrate the college’s many exceptional graduates by nominating a graduate whose contributions have made the college, state, and world a better place! The person selected for CTAHR’s 2019 Outstanding Alumnus/Alumna Award will be recognized at CTAHR’s Annual Award Banquet in May. The deadline to submit nominations is February 1.
HNFAS alumnus and instructor Jordan Oshiro is featured in an article in Ka Leo, a Thanksgiving “survival guide” for vegans written by a former vegan. Noting that veganism is on the rise, Jordan helps to dispel some misconceptions about this diet: it's often preferable in terms of health, but it’s also important to remember that specific foods aren’t bad in and of themselves; it’s just important to eat them in balance.
NREM alumna Flavia da Silva, project management specialist for USAID/Timor-Leste, recently led an Ocean Talk at the Our Oceans Conference 2018 along with Timor-Leste Secretary of State for the Environment Demitrio do Amaral de Carvalho. Flavia (right) explained, “Our Oceans Conference was an excellent opportunity for USAID/Timor-Leste to highlight its work on the protection of Timor-Leste’s marine biodiversity."
FDM alumna and award-winning author Janet Mock will be the commencement speaker at UHM’s graduation ceremony in December. Janet is a writer, cultural commentator, and advocate for transgender women’s rights who has been called one of “the most influential people on the Internet” and one of “12 new faces of black leadership” by TIME.
MS alumna Keano Pavlosky, now in medical school at JABSOM, is first author of a recently published article, “The Effects of Transfer From Steady-State to Tidally-Changing Salinities on Plasma and Branchial Osmoregulatory Variables in Adult Mozambique Tilapia,” based on the MS thesis she completed in the lab of co-author Andre Seale (HNFAS).
