Watch it on KFVE and ‘Olelo

If you missed the premiere of the 55th annual UHM Fashion Show, it’s not too late to catch the designs and virtual show of our talented students. Tune in this Sunday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m. on KFVE. The show also airs multiple times on ‘Olelo channel 53. Or, you can visit Hawai’i News Now. The virtual fashion show features collections from three senior undergraduate students in the Fashion Design and Merchandising program of the Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences, as well as 2020 fashion design student graduates. The runway footage was shot by the students — all on their smartphones.

Exhibition of rare robes will greet Chinese scholars

Shu Hwa Lin, in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, is preparing a special costume exhibition for the Hawaii International Conference on Chinese Studies to welcome international scholars and conference attendees. The exhibition will highlight three rare and beautiful Chinese Qing Dynasty dragon robes.

At the next COF Brown Bag seminar, Thao Le will present “The Role of Culture and Context in Mindfulness Training & Dissemination.” In this presentation, she will share her research and experiences in sharing mindfulness with health, human, and social service professionals in Hawai‘i, centering mindfulness within the ALOHA response, and her mindfulness and service learning project in Vietnam.

You’ll see it’s true at the curated group exhibit Romeo and Juliet - The Past and Through a Modern Lens put on by the Costume Collection and the FDM 460 class. This exhibit is inspired by the many modern retellings and performances of Romeo and Juliet.

The FDM program is hosting a seminar presentation by visiting scholar Genny Lai entitled “3D Body Scan Apply on Intelligent Medical Garments with Smart-Cloth.” Genny (Ching-I) Lai (left) is a PhD student in the Department of Design at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, but she is visiting FDM to work under professor Shu Hwa Lin (right).
