A Sense of Place

FDM partners with Theater and Dance for designs in scenic locations

Using a computer to create clothing designs and then view them on a virtual mannequin? That’s exactly what students do in Fashion Design and Merchandising’s 2D/3D Computer-Aided Design class. But how would their outfits look on the runway, in a business office, or a variety of other settings? To find out, FDM 338 collaborated this past semester with Theater and Dance’s Advanced Scenic Design class on 3D fashion runway design projects. And the result? Watch the video to find out!
“This project was a wonderful endeavor for our students, as well as a fun and fulfilling experience to collaborate with Theater students,” says Ju-Young Kang. “Students loved seeing how their ideas ‘came to life’ by sharing their collections and trying out different runways. We encouraged them to add their own specific ideas, which made the endeavor even more exciting.”

Road to Runway

FDM's 55th annual fashion show will premiere May 10 on KFVE and ‘Ōlelo

If you missed having an annual UHM Fashion Show, the good news is, it’s back! For CTAHR’s student designers and fashion promotion students, this year’s Road To Runway: The Fashion Show means the show really does go on. In fact, this year it’s on TV. The Road To Runway telecast premieres May 10 on KFVE 6 and ‘Ōlelo 53, with a livestream on hawaiinewsnow.com. The 55th annual show will highlight three seniors:

  • Helen Park, who was motivated by a desire for the outdoors during the pandemic’s stay-at-home orders for her collection, “Under the Sun”
  • Aaron Jay Guillermo, who is inspired by the women in his life for his collection, “After School Special”
  • Jade Young, whose favorite color, pink, inspired her collection, “Dazzling A˝

Fashion From Afar

FDM professor shares his insights with students 8,642 miles away

With the recent publication of his latest book, Fashion, Dress, and Post-postmodernism, Andy Reilly of the Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences caught the attention of instructors at the Lebanese American University. Andy was invited to provide a guest lecture for the university's new course, Fashion Studies Seminar, and – given the ubiquity of online access, he was able to speak with the students in Beirut, while never leaving Honolulu. For his lecture, “Attention Deficit Fashion:  Post-postmodernism in the Fashion Industry,” he presented his work and discussed the students' own projects.

“We are leaving postmodernism behind and entering a new phase called post-postmodernism,” Andy told the class. “One of the outcomes of this new condition is rapid turnover of retail stock due to shortened attention spans and an industry desiring to meet the need for constant newness, resulting in micro-trends that disappear in a few weeks and are quickly replaced by something new. And of course, that relates to excess waste.”

The class ended with an invite for Andy to visit the university and its students – in person – when it is safe to travel again. Andy’s also been invited to lecture at Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich, Germany.

Post Post-Modern

FDM professor edits a book on fashion’s direction under contemporary conditions

Is post-modernism dead in dress, fashion, and appearance? If we are in a new era, how should it be called, and what’s the influence of this post post-modernism on design houses and mass producers? What are the new geographic and identity markers? And which artists will lead fashion exploration? A new book, Fashion, Dress, and Post-postmodernism, is a companion to ongoing research on the relationships between post-postmodernism, fashion, and dress. Edited by professor Andy Reilly of the Fashion Design and Merchandising program in the Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences, the book is a collection of essays from noted scholars on contemporary theories of culture, and their applicability to dress and retail practices. “I am very excited to see this book in print,” says Andy. “This area of research on contemporary conditions is emerging and is the first book to address fashion in relation to them.”

He adds, “I am especially thankful to retired FDM instructor Marcia Morgado for her pioneer work on dress theory, which has inspired many others researchers, including myself.”
