In Memoriam: Dr. Krishanlal "Kris" C. Khatri

Dr. Krishanlal "Kris" C. Khatri’s academic journey and professional career were a testament to his dedication to improving lives through science, service, and sustainability, values that resonate deeply with the mission of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR). At the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Kris's studies within CTAHR focused on innovative water conservation methods, including drip irrigation, which maximized the efficient use of water to ensure successful crop growth. This research reflected his strong commitment to sustainability, a core principle of CTAHR's work in promoting environmental stewardship and food security. After earning his MS from UH Mānoa and completing his PhD in Agricultural Engineering at McGill University, Kris’s career took him around the world—serving as Director at the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources, then as a Water Supply Engineer for the Vermont Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and later, spending over two decades contributing to Wisconsin’s water supply program. His lifelong dedication to water conservation and his efforts to protect natural resources earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Rural Water Association. Kris's intellectual curiosity and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie, and his five children and eight grandchildren.
