Horticulture science alumna Nellie Sugii will talk about her work curating, storing, and propagating rare and endangered native plants and significant Hawaiian crops as Hawaiian Rare Plant Program manager at Lyon Arboretum at the October Honolulu Science Cafe, a monthly program hosted by Hawai‘i Academy of Science.

No host dinner is at 6 p.m., followed by the talk at 7 p.m. at JJ's Bistro, 3447 Waialae Ave. Note: JJ's is BYOB.

Sugii was recognized as a 2016 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Recovery Champion for her leadership in the recovery efforts for Hawai'i's rare plant species. She has successfully propagated more than 500 of the over 1,300 native Hawaiian plant taxa, using techniques such as micropropagation, seed banking, and greenhouse propagation.
