CTAHR dietetics alumnae Shelley Wong and Lucia Amore, currently medical students at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, are continuing the CTAHR tradition of service!
Shelley (right) and Lucia (second from left) are on track to graduate as M.D.s next year, but right now they’re helping make things a little easier for classmates who graduated in 2019—young doctors whose already exhausting and stressful intern year is exacerbated by COVID-19.
Thinking of the 2019 JABSOM grads, now spread over the nation’s hospitals, Shelly came up with the idea of sending care packages and cards to all of them. “It would be nice for the JABSOM ‘ohana to send MD 2019 interns something special from home to boost morale and let them know we are thinking of them, thankful for their service, and so, so proud and in awe of them!”
Lucia, the incoming president of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (and daughter of TPSS professor Tessie Amore!), found partners to support the initiative. “We’ve all been working to make this project happen. We’re lucky in that we have a solid JABSOM ‘ohana behind us.”
The society advocates for placing human interests, values, and dignity at the core of medical teaching and practice. The group assembled 62 care packages of Hawaiian-style treats and local favorites for the MD 2019 doctors who are interning through the pandemic, bringing a little sunshine to their days.
