Islam, Fashion, and Freedom
The FCS guest speaker series welcomes Ali Amer Taha Al-Hindawi, an Iraqi refugee who is currently working at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland. He has conducted workshops and given seminars on interfaith harmony, global cultural diversity, and breast cancer. He will be giving several talks: on Tuesday, April 23, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Miller 101, he will discuss “My Life as a Young Arab in the West.” From 6 to 8 p.m. on the same day and in the same room, he will discuss “The New Challenges of Diversity,” a critical discussion of diversity and difference within different cultural contexts (e.g., Western vs. Arabian) and implications for society and government. On Thursday, April 26, from 9 to 10:15 a.m., in Kuykendall 306, he will present on “Fashion and Freedom,” including how clothes can be political, representative of freedom, and dangerous to non-conformists; topics will include Islamic, Christian, and Jewish clothing traditions, hate crimes, and victim blaming. From 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller 101 on the same day, Mr. Al-Hindawi will lead an interactive activity, “Clothing and Islam,” using games and simulation to discuss feelings and attitudes and behaviors related to Islamic clothing. He will also be available to meet with students and faculty on Monday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to noon; on Wednesday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Friday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, all in Miller 208.
