Samoa Swine Survey

Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Science Specialist Halina Zaleski returned to American Samoa to help the Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources Division of American Samoa Community College conduct a swine disease survey.

“This project helps us understand the health concerns and other challenges farmers face, and to increase the experience of students in some of the practices to care for and understand the health of the pigs,” she said. No such swine disease survey had been conducted in American Samoa for 20 years.

Zaleski and a Extension swine specialist colleague from Nebraska, Thomas Petznick, also conducted a swine management workshop, which offered helpful health management tips and discussed observations from local pig farms.

She had previously visited in 2016 to assist with an artificial insemination project that was a collaboration between the community college and Samoa’s Department of Agriculture.
