A Graftin’ Good Time

CTAHR’s Andrea Kawabata, Stuart T. Nakamoto, Alyssa Cho and Ty McDonald, along with Tracie Matsumoto (USDA) organized three hands-on avocado-grafting workshops for 45 growers in Hilo and Kona to provide information about the team’s ‘Sharwil’ Avocado Project, and teach skills necessary to successfully graft avocado trees.

Funded by the Western Risk Management Education Center, the workshops covered the ‘Sharwil’ export program, recordkeeping, basics of grafting, genetic testing of ‘Sharwil’ trees and the Hawai‘i Avocado Association. Attendees practiced shaping the scion and creating a wedge graft, and then grafted ‘Sharwil’ scions onto seedling avocado rootstocks. Each attendee received four avocado plants.

The workshop was an offshoot of a 2016 Agricultural Professionals (AgPro) grafting and teaching training event by California instructor Joe Sabol. Twenty CTAHR and USDA faculty and staff attended that training with support from CTAHR Supplemental Funds.
