Dean's Message: The Big Picture

Maria Gallo

Strategic planning is all about the big picture, because you have to know what excellence looks like in order to achieve it. So I am excited about the collaborative effort we are undertaking to imagine what CTAHR can become and map out how to get there.

As we proceed, I urge you to keep the bigger purpose in sight as we identify common themes, existing strengths, and necessary transformations.

If we do that, we can all emerge from the planning process with energy and enthusiasm … and a strong, vibrant future for our college.

Charting Our Course to Excellence: Preparation for the Journey

“I walked out of that meeting feeling as if I had a bigger purpose, not only at work but in my life.
I wanted to obtain visions and goals, whether at work, at home, or at play.“

–CTAHR strategic planning participant

Context

CTAHR has a unique responsibility to fulfill the University of Hawai‘i's federal Land Grant mandate of instruction, scientific research, and outreach to address state needs. Strategic planning guides the college in executing its promise to support Hawai‘i's people and their place.

The Process

Internal and external stakeholders statewide are sharing their thoughts about where the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources needs to move in the future and how it can get there. The process involves several phases over the course of several months, culminating in a retreat to analyze information and launch development of action plans to address the most important initiatives. The phases are—

  • Guidance questions (unit feedback via the Leadership Team)
  • Strategic planning sessions (faculty and staff members)
  • Stakeholder interviews (community members and students)
  • Appreciative interviews (faculty, staff, and students)
  • Two-day strategic planning retreat
  • Action plan development

Information and Participation
